It was a very emotional day for those who knew and loved Chris Kelly. The former Kris Kross rapper, better known as “Mac Daddy,” was mourned by his family and friends – including his mentor Jermaine Dupri (who wore his pants backwards in remembrance of Chris) and the rap partner, Chris Smith - today at the Atlanta Baptist Church for the 34-year-old his funeral.
Chris Smith gave a tearful eulogy for his late friend, and addressed Chris Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, by telling her, “I know I can not fill Chris’ shoes, but I am always gonna be here.”
After recalling some of the memories he has created with Chris Kelly over the last 30 years, Smith continued his speech to say, “That is the Chris I always knew. He was a true friend. He always wanted to see if I was all right. I just want to say I love you, man. I would say Kris Kross forever, but without Chris, it will never gonna be the same. But I hope our legacy for hip-hop is never forgotten. I am gonna do my part to make sure Chris’ legacy will live on.”
Several songs were performed during the ceremony by some of the late rapper’s famous friends, include Keke Wyatt and Xscape.
Tameka “Tiny” Harris posted a photo of Chris Kelly on Instagram and wrote, “Just left my friend my label mates funeral. Hé was à great guy with a big heart.. we will always remember his big legacy hé left behind. U will truly be missed & loved! May he Rest In Peace..”
Meanwhile, Jermaine Dupri quoted Kelly on Twitter, writing, “I devoted my whole life to rocking mics and getting crowds lifted, put my pants on backwards cause I wanted to be different – Chris Kelly”
A public wake for the Kris Kross rapper was held yesterday in Atlanta. A picture of Chris Kelly was passed around under the visitors, with admirers writing messages for Chris like “Rest in Peace” and “Keep Jumpin’ in Heaven.” Some of Kris Kross’ hits were being played in the background, as guest slowly walked by to greet his coffin.
Chris Kelly’s actual cause of death is currently pending on toxicology results, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office. Police are currently investigating the rapper’s cause of death as a possible drug overdose after his body was found unresponsive at his Atlanta home on May 1th. He was immediately transported to the nearby hospital but pronounced dead shortly after.
